Opening Comments at the League of Women’s Voters Mayoral Forum/WYPR

As a life-long city resident, I have been here for more than 58 years. Over the past 40 years I have been involved in trying to improve neighborhoods and serve people in a variety of ways. I decided to run for Mayor, because I have come to the conclusion that conditions will not improve by continuing to do what we have been doing for the past 20 years.

We have 47,000 vacant housing units, a murder and crime rate that are excessively high, we pay the highest taxes in the state, we continue to lose residents and jobs, the streets and alleys are filthy, recreation centers are closing and every year we have a budget crisis. The current Mayor argues that we should continue on the same course, and she says that it is irresponsible to pursue anything more than the token property tax reduction she has put forth.
